His Grace Dr. Stephanos Mar Theodosius of Blessed Memory was the Founder Bishop of Madras and Calcutta Dioceses of the Malankara Orthodox Church. His Grace was also the Founder Director of St. Thomas Mission – a responsibility which he blessedly fulfilled till his last breath. St. Thomas Mission is the official Socio-Developmental wing of the Outside Kerala Mission of Malankara Orthodox Church for Social Action, Relief and Development of all persons irrespective of race, caste and creed.
In the 1960s His Grace studied in the United States and received a BD from the General Theological Seminary, New York in 1966, and a STM from Berkley Divinity School at Yale University in 1967. The General Theological Seminary awarded him an Honorary D.D. in 1990.
The hallmarks of His Grace were his dedication, humility and simplicity. Christ’s love compelled His Grace to take up God’s work. His philosophy of life was Work is Worship and hence whatever he did, he did with a religious fervour and expected the same from others. He never seemed to be perturbed by the sheer magnitude or the difficult terrain he had to traverse for fulfilling his goals which focussed on Livelihood, Self-Sustenance, Basic Health and Education. Only people with extraordinary will power and unshakable faith in God can ever think of undertaking such tasks. Though there were difficulties in implementing his projects, it is quite discernible from his expression, that one can overcome adversity with steadfastness and perseverance. By establishing educational institutions and social service centres, His Grace had proved his commitment time and again to the society.
As Jesus had sent his disciples to different parts of the world, Mar Theodosius was sent to Central India and thus started a new era for the people there. Like the hero in the legend of Abou Ben Adam, His Grace did not want his name to be written in the list of saints who love God, but only in the list of those who love man. His Grace is acknowledged for the distinguished service to all people and we thank and praise God for this supernatural gift of Grace.
