75th Republic Day

St. Thomas College, Ruabandha, Bhilai celebrated 75th Republic Day with zeal and enthusiasm. The celebration focused on the theme of 75 th Republic Day- Developed India and Bharat: The Mother of Democracy. Corporator of Municipal Corporation, Risali, Mrs. Maya Yadav was present as the chief guest on this occasion. Principal of the college Dr. M. G. Roymon hoisted the National Flag. Addressing the gathering Principal Dr. M. G. Roymon said that India is the country of hope, new energy and new challenges and the real strength of the country is the youth who have the Potential to take the country towards new heights and success. Chief Guest Mrs. Maya Yadav said that our constitution gives the right to education and the youth can transform the country’s future by acquiring knowledge. Staff members Dr. Santosh Miri, Mr. Surya Prakash, Ms. Sanchana Sahu, NCC Cadet Deepika Janghel, NSS volunteer Devjani Choudhaury and Dhananjay Yadav shared their views on this occasion. Chief Guest Mrs. Maya Yadav and Principal Dr. M. G. Roymon administered the Oath of National Voter’s Day. On this occasion First Shift Incharge Dr. Chanda Verma, Second Shift Incharge Dr. Debjani Mukherjee, Dr. James Mathew Head PG Dept. of Chemistry, Capt. Dr. Surekha Jawade, Lt. Mr. Santosh Yadav, Heads of various departments, faculty members, NCC cadets, NSS volunteers and students were present. The program was conducted by NSS Program Officer Mr. Mahendra Ikhar.

Community Service Organised by Department of Education

The Department of Education, St. Thomas College Bhilai organised Community Service Program at Government School, Kaatro. The community service program as a part of B.Ed first year syllabus, encourage students to engage in social  and community development.

The program was inaugurated by Principal of the college, Dr M.G. Roymon, who congratulated B. Ed students for their team work in organising all kinds of cultural, sports, teaching, and craft work in the school premises. Headmasters of Primary School and Middle Schools, Mr. Narendra Deshlehre and Mr.Dalu Ram Sahu, and the Principal and Vice Principal of the Higher Secondary School, Mr. R.K. Bannore and Mrs. Vijaya Lakshmi and all the teaching staff and students of Govt. school extended their cordial support and cooperated with B.Ed students & staff for the smooth conduction of the program. IQAC coordinator of St. Thomas College, Dr. Debjani Mukherjee congratulated the B.Ed trainees for their team work in organising the community services in the government school.

In-charge of Community Service, Ms. Deepti Santosh guided the students to organise various events, including teaching, art and craft, and sports at the school. Besides, the students organised a rally program to raise awareness in the community about the environment, and also conducted a small survey in the village to gain insight about the village Kaatro. Head of Education Department Dr. Sheeja Thomas and the faculty members of Education Department supported the students for the proper execution of the program.

B.Ed teacher-trainees as well as the school children showcased their talents and conducted cultural programmes that were applauded by everyone. School children thoroughly enjoyed the event and participated in great numbers. Towards the end of the programme, the prizes and gifts were distributed to the school students.

 

National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE-2024)

The Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) successfully organised the National Graduate Physics Examination (NGPE-2024) at St. Thomas College, Ruabandha, Bhilai. The annual examination, which took place on January 21, 2024, from 10 AM to 01 PM, is a crucial event for B.Sc. students across various colleges.

The Department of Physics & Electronics at St. Thomas College, Bhilai, has been actively hosting this examination for more than 8 years, providing a platform for B.Sc. students to showcase their physics knowledge and skills.

Dr Amit Kumar Tamrakar, the centre in-charge of NGPE-2024, expressed satisfaction with the smooth conduct of the examination. He highlighted that any B.Sc. student from a recognized college is eligible to participate in this annual event, which serves as an excellent opportunity for students to test their understanding of physics concepts.

The administrators of St. Thomas College, Bhilai, including Dr. Joshi Varghese and Principal Dr. M.G. Roymon, extended their best wishes to all the students who appeared for the NGPE-2024. They emphasized the importance of such examinations in promoting academic excellence and fostering a passion for physics among the student community.

Certificate Programme on “Career Option in Civil Services”

The Civil Services Aspirants Club  of St. Thomas College, Bhilai inaugurated a fifteen-day certificate programme on the topic “career option in civil services.”The certificate programme aims to provide insight into various aspects of UPSC and other competitive examinations along with the degree programme.

At the outset, Dr. Sheeja Varkey, convenor of the Civil Services Aspirants Club, welcomed the gathering. Principal Dr.M G. Roymon felicitated the distinguished guest and highlighted on the importance of determination, perseverance, and diligence for cracking any competitive exam. Speaking on the occasion, IQAC Coordinator Dr. Debjani Mukherjee inspired the students to set goals and have strong willpower to achieve them.

Mr. Vinay Singh,  professional faculty member of  UPSC coaching academy, was the guest speaker for the occasion. He emphasized on the significance of civil services in India and the potential career path it offers.

The Resource Person  shared real-life inspirational anecdotes of many IAS officers to motivate the aspirants. While talking about career options in the service, he posed a series of questions to the aspirants, asking them about their interest in the civil service and how to prepare for selecting a specialization paper in the civil service exam.

The programme was conducted by Ms. Deepti Santosh (Head, in charge Department of Sociology), and  vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Shubha Diwan (Assistant Professor, Department of Bio-Technology), Heads of Departments, organizing committee members of civil services aspirants club, faculty members and students were present in large numbers in the programme.

Seven Days NSS Special Camp

St. Thomas College, Ruabandha, Bhilai  organized  Seven Days NSS Special Camp  at Village Pauwara. The Chief Guest of the program was Mr. Vaman Kumar Sahu, Sarpanch of Village Pauwara.  The programme commenced with the chief guest offering a floral tribute to the youth icon Swami Vivekanand. Mr. Vaman Kumar Sahu congratulated all the volunteers for their outstanding work in the village. NSS Program Officer of St. Thomas College, Mr. Mahendra Ikhar presented a brief report of various activities conducted by the NSS volunteers during the camp. Mr. H. L. Jangade, Principal Incharge Govt. Higher Secondary School, Pauwara was invited as Special Guest for the concluding day of the NSS camp.  Mr. Jangade appreciated the work done by volunteers in the school campus. Principal of the college Dr. M. G. Roymon congratulated the NSS unit for successful completion of the camp. NSS Volunteer Dhananjay Yadav presented the objectives of NSS and said that NSS camp help students to develop socially and professionally.  All the volunteers were awarded certificates by the chief guest for their commendable contribution in the NSS camp. The program was conducted by NSS volunteer Khomendra Sahu and vote of thanks was proposed by NSS volunteer Bhavini Verma.

MBSI Bestows “Best Student Award “

Microbiologist’s Society, India (MBSI) has selected four students of St. Thomas College, Bhilai and has honoured them with ‘Best Student Award’. The best student awardees were selected on basis of their overall academic and Co-curricular performance. Ms Arparna Kujur (M.Sc. Biotechnology), Ms. Kauqub Fatima (M.Sc. Microbiology), Ms. Nishita Gautam (B.Sc. Microbiology) and Mr. Naveen (B.Sc. Biotechnology) were selected for the awards. The award ceremony on behalf of MBSI was organized at Shri Shankarachaya Mahavidyalaya, Junwani; Durg. Administrator of the College; Dr. Father Joshi Varghese, Principal; Dr M.G. Roymon, College Management and staff congratulated the students for their achievement.

LABORATORY VISIT

The PG Department of Botany and Chemistry St Thomas College, Bhilai under its community development programme had organized a one day laboratory visit activity for the students of Sw. Pukeshwar Singh Bhardiya Government College Nikumb District Durg on 01st December 2023. The activity was organized with the objective “to learn the working and handling of various laboratory instruments”. 25 students of B.Sc III visited the laboratories of Botany, Chemistry and Plant tissue culture and they have learnt the basic specifications and working of different instruments. They also got the chance to see the basic procedure to be followed while working and handling the instruments. The fundamentals of spectrophotometric methods were explained by Dr. Chanda Verma Associate Professor, Chemistry. The fundamental working principle of various instruments like Autoclave, Hot air oven, Incubator etc. was demonstrated by Mr Devnarayan Patel Assistant Professor, Botany. The summarized protocol while working in plant tissue culture lab was demonstrated by Dr Ujjawal Supe Assistant Professor Biotechnology & Dr Suruchi Parkhey Assistant Professor Botany. Mrs. Annapurna Yadav Assistant Professor Botany and Dr.Shippi Dewangan Assistant Professor Chemistry of Sw. Pukeshwar Singh Bhardiya Government College Nikumb were present with the students.

The Chief Patron of the college H.G. Alexios Mar Eusebius, Patron of the college Reverent Father Dr. Joshi Varghese and the Principal of the college Dr. M.G. Roymon appreciated the initiative taken. The program was done under the guidance of Dr James Mathew Principal incharge and Head Department of Chemistry. The programme was coordinated by Dr Jyoti Bakshi Head Department of Botany St Thomas College, Bhilai.

INTERNATIONAL DISABILITY DAY

Department of Psychology, St. Thomas College Bhilai organised a field visit  to Sarthak Kadam Sansthan a school for specially abled students and MOU partner of the college. This activity was to commemorate International Disability Day and the psychology students wholeheartedly took part in it.  The agenda of the program was to spread the awareness regarding the specially abled children and their teaching learning practices. The program highlighted the therapeutic approach regarding the children with autistism, mental retardation, ADHD, cerebral palsy by improving their listening skills, eye contact, body language speech and self awareness. The students learned about the therapies applicable to manage these special children.
The students of the College distributed stationeries and toys that enhance the motor and cognitive functions of the special children.
Administrator of the college Rev. Father Dr. Joshi Varghese praised the efforts of the department. Principal Dr. M. G. Roymon encouraged the program with his best wishes and said such programs benefit the students and their all-round development. Dr. Debjani Mukherjee, Head, P.G Department of Psychology stressed on the fact that such training has great importance as it is an area of niche work in the development of special children. Practical viewing of the daily activities by the students will be a great learning process for the students. Mrs. G. Vani, Principal of Sarthak Kadam Sansthan informed about the parental and society’s role in the care of special children.   Assistant professors of the college Dr. Sumita Singh, Dr. Ankita Deshmukh  and Ms. Sanchana Sahu supervised the visit and training session for the students.

NATIONAL POLLUTION DAY

In observance of Pollution Day, the Chemistry Department at St. Thomas College organized an impactful Essay Writing Competition on the theme “Go Green and Breathe Pure Air.” Students demonstrated their commitment to environmental awareness and sustainability through insightful essays. The esteemed panel of judges, comprising faculty members, evaluated entries based on creativity and depth of analysis.

Winners will be honored in a special ceremony, recognizing their contributions to the discourse on pollution. St. Thomas College remains dedicated to fostering both academic excellence and social responsibility.

WORLD AIDS DAY

The P.G. Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology organized an awareness rally to commemorate World AIDS Day on 1st December 2023. This year’s theme for World AIDS Day is “World AIDS Day 35: Remember and Commit”. This day is mainly celebrated to bring people together and raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and to demonstrate solidarity to the affected people.

The staff and students of P.G. Department of Microbiology & Biotechnology in collaboration with NCC Unit of the college conducted the rally to create awareness amongst its students and the local people in Ruabandha sector about the causes, social stigma associated with the disease and also to encourage progress in AIDS prevention. Principal In-charge Dr James Mathew, flagged off the rally from the college campus to BSP Middle school, Ruabandha sector. The students from both PG and UG enthusiastically participated in the activity and raised slogans related to AIDS awareness. All science students and teachers participated in the rally along with NCC cadets creating awareness against the spread of HIV and AIDS.
