FACILITIES
- Special Teaching Assistance Programme (STAP) -The STAP program enable the weak students to progress along with other students. The extra time is devoted to students, to help them understand the topic which was otherwise explained in the class.
- Departmental library– The department has huge collection of112 Books for both UG and PG student. The faculty members have also donated about 25 books to the Departmental Library.
- Internet facility– The department has well equipped Wi-Fi Facility with One Printer and Desktop Computer.
- Laboratory– For conducting practical and research work a well equipped laboratory with PCR, HPLC, GEL-DOC etc. are available
DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES / FORUMS
GENESIS – The Association of Microbiology & Biotechnology
GENESIS was established in the year 2002 as a core activity of the Biotechnology and Microbiology Initiative. The aim of this association is to offer a neutral space for discussion, effective knowledge-sharing, and partnership-building among the students and the faculty members. The association offers its members reliable, and impartial information on current and prospective developments in key areas of the life sciences. The association works as a stepping stone to pursue the dreams and help to achieve the carrer goals of the students. The forum helps in bringing out the enthusiasm and zeal of students in the areas of Biotechnology and Microbiology. The activities like guest lectures, Competitive events, Industrial visits, Community services, Awareness programmes, Science day celebration, Conferences and workshops are organized by this association to enhance the skills of the members and help them to come out with flying colours.
ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES 2017-18
- Inauguration of Forum – GENESIS
The activities under the aegis of the forum GENESIS for the year 2017-18 is inaugurated by Dr. M.G. Roymon, Principal, St. Thomas College, with a lecture on “Preparation for CSIR NET” delivered by Dr. Shubha Diwan, Asst. Professor, St. Thomas College on 11th August 2017.
- Workshop
A week long workshop on “Bioinformatics and the way forward” was organized in collaboration with NITZA Bioventure, Hyderabad from 06-11 September 2017. The students of B.Sc. Part III and PG students participated and got skilled with different tools of Bioinformatics. The training included Multiple sequence alignment, protein sequence alignment, molecular docking for application in drug discovery.
- Educational tour to Devbhog Diary; Charoda, Raipur and Science city; Raipur.
An educational tour for B.Sc. final year and M.Sc. Microbiology & Biotechnology students was organized on 16 November 2017. The one-day tour comprised of a visit to Devbhog Diary industries Pvt. Ltd where the students visited the production unit as well as the quality control cell. The students were provided with a thorough knowledge of the sanitation system as well as the production and processing of various dairy products in the plant. The students also visited Science city; Raipur where they got a chance to have a glimpse of various instruments; their working, use, application etc.
- Orientation on CSIR/ UGC NET for M.Sc. Students. The lecture was given by Dr. Shubha Thakur on how to proceed for NET preparation.
An orientation program was arranged for the P.G. students on 21 August 2017 to orient the students on how to prepare for the CSIR/UGC NET exam. Dr. Shubha Thakur, Faculty of the department provided a detailed insight into the syllabus of NET and oriented the students with pattern of question paper and the main topics to be covered for cracking the exam.

- WORKSHOP A week long workshop on “Maintenance and repair of laboratory instruments” was organized in collaboration with Western Regional Instrumentation Center (WRIC), Mumbai from 1-7 August 2016.

- EDUCATIONAL TOUR An educational tour was organized for P.G. students of Microbiology and Biotechnology to Hyderabad from 14 -19 October 2016. The students visited e-Biologicals, Dupoint and Salarjung Museum

- AIDS AWARNESS DAY : AIDS awareness day was celebrated on 1st December 2016 under the aegis of P.G. Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology in association with NCC and NSS. A short program was organized in which P.G. students of Microbiology and Biotechnology delivered Power Point presentation on HIV and AIDS to bring awareness among students about this deadly disease.
