150th Birth Anniversary Celebration of Mahatma Gandhi through various culture and tradition.

To Celebrate the 150th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, St. Thomas College under the aegis of “ KalaPratibha”  conducted many competitions on Gandhian Principles and his teachings for Modern Indian Society. The most important teachings of Mahatma  was emphasized on “Cleanliness”for which cleanliness Drive was  undertaken by the students  by displaying posters and paintings on the particular topic. Likewise different competitions were held to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of our father of the nation. The competitions were followed by Essay competition, Quiz, One Act Play, Debate and Extempore. The students enthusiastically participated in all the competitions and showed their tribute to the great leader of the Nation. The events were highly applauded by the Management, Principal and other staff members of the College. The Program was successfully conducted under the supervision of Dr. Jayshree Balasubramanian and cultural team.

St. Thomas College Conducts 2 Day Workshop and Competition on Natural Medicine and its Scope in Biomedical Sector

The P.G. Department of Botany conducted 2 Day Workshop and Competition on Natural Medicine and its Scope in Biomedical Sector in association with Shaastra Fest – IIT Madras Event. The workshop was conducted by Mentor- Dr. Jyoti Bala, School of Biotechnology, REVA University, India arranged by Make Intern.com. 34 students from St. Thomas College, Bhilai Mahila Mahavidyalaya and C.G.K.Veterinary College, Anjora participated in the workshop.The workshop began with ice breaking session followed by a presentation on introduction, relevance and application of Natural Medicine and its scope and career perspectives in research and industry. Hands on training on Bioinformatics for drug studies and characterization was followed by Group discussion. Wet lab experiments on Experimental brief and characterization studies designing were also conducted. Wet-lab championship conducted the first round of competition through group discussion, question answer session and written examinations.  Test evaluation and results declaration was done in the closing session. The winners of the first round Ms. Yasmin Hussain, Ms Ritupana Sahoo and Ms. Katha Sanyal will participate in the final round at IIT Madras. Fit India Movement is successfully inaugurated in St. Thomas College

The NSS unit of St. Thomas College today on 29th August 2019 launched and joins the Fit India Movement started by honorable Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi. On this occasion the live telecast of the “Fit India Movement” by Doordarshan was observed by students and staff members of the College in the conference hall. The main objective of this program is to make all Indians fit and healthy as well as to create awareness among people about health and fitness. During the program Principal Dr. M. G. Roymon motivated all students and staff members by saying that to become fit and healthy everyone should do exercise on daily basis. On this auspicious occasion students and all staff members were present. Finally Mr. Mahendra Ikhar, NSS Program officer proposed vote of thanks.

Youth Awareness Event “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara”

The NSS and NCC unit of St. Thomas College organized a Youth Awareness Event “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara in collaboration with Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce in the conference hall. During the session students were informed about Road Safety Rules, Rain Water Harvesting and Tree Plantation. Along with the session the tree plantation was done by Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce along with NSS and NCC unit. Mr. Ajay Bhasin the youth wing unit Incharge of Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce were the chief guest of today’s event. First of all Principal Dr. M. G. Roymon by motivating students said that the this initiative taken by Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce is very good because it will generate a sense of responsibility within students regarding Road Safety Rules, Rain Water Harvesting and Tree Plantation. Mr. Vijay Sharma from Traffic Police Department told to students about road safety rules and driving patterns in different conditions of roads. Mr. Ajay Shukla from Municipal Corporation told about segregation of dry and wet waste and its treatment. Mr. Ajay Bhasin told that Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce is conducting awareness programs in schools and colleges to motivate youth towards responsibility to society. Mr. Gargi Shankar Mishra discussed the importance of trees and water harvesting. During the session everyone in the program took an oath for following road safety rules. At the end an activity was conducted by traffic police department related to driving rules. In boys Ankit Kumar and from girls Sanjana chhattija were winner from department of management studies. Winners were awarded as helmets by Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Ashok Kumar Mishra head Dept. of Commerce proposed vote of thanks and BBA student Aliya Anjum and Mr. Hemnat Arora form chhattija were winner from department of management studies. Winners were awarded as helmets by Chhattisgarh Chamber of Commerce successfully conducted the event.

Inauguration of 15 Day Workshop on Botanical Illustrations.

The PG Department of Botany inaugurates a workshop on Desaturation in Botanical Illustrations for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The workshop was inaugurated by an address on Botanical Illustrations: Blending of Art and Science by Dr. Disha Chauhan, Freelance Science Illustrator certified Natural History Illustrator from New Castle University, Australia.

A student of botany needs to depict the form, colour, and details of plant species. Although botanical illustration is an art, its main concern is scientific accuracy. The illustration is taken as reference and thus it requires keen observation of the species which makes the subject plant different from other plant species. Dr. Chauhan introduced the students on taking career as Botanical Illustrator as well as to the contributions of Ms. Hemlata Pradhan, a renowned Indian botanical illustrator.Dr. M.G. Roymon Principal appreciated the efforts of Botanical Association for providing an opportunity to develop their skills in Botanical Illustration in the guidance of Alumina of the institution Dr. Disha Chauhan.The Convenor Dr. Jyoti Bakshi found the session very stimulating and informativeincreasing its academic accessibility through a practical, modern application of a time-tested practice.

St Thomas College organised orientation Program

St Thomas College, Journalism and Mass Communication department organized an orientation programme to give introduction about the college and Journalism and mass communication department to newly joined freshers. The chief guest of the programme was Mr. Jacob Kurian DGM-PR Bhilai Steel Plant who interacted with the students and shared his views on journalism and It’s relation with public.

The event was successfully organised under the guidance of College Principal Dr M G Roymon, Dean of the college Dr Vinita Thomas and Head of the department Dr Aparna Ghosh. Faculties Dr Aditi Namdeo, Md Zakir Hussain and Mr. Gavendra Deshmukh along with faculties and students of other department graced the occasion with their presence.

While interacting with the students Mr. Jacob Kurian talked about the value of experiences faced in life. He shared that during his time there weren’t many people to teach him through their experience and hardship to take as a guidance. He suggested current students to feel blessed about the fact that through medium of such programs they get to learn from experiences of recognized faces. He even guided the students to build their own path and face hardships with bravery and learn from their experiences so that they can build thier own story to share.

The event began with college prayer after which the guest was felicitated with floral bouquet and momento, followed by welcome address by college principal Dr.M G Roymon. Later students of Journalism and Mass Communication Atanu Sarkar, Saba Khan and Surbhi Maharana presented a PPT presentation on behalf of the department. Faculty Dr Aditi Namdeo proposed the vote of thanks and the programme was coordinated by joint effort of Sakshi Sainik and Saba Khan.
