Certificate Program on “Introduction to Econometrics”

The PG Department of Economics organised the Inaugural session of thirty hours Certificate Program on “Introduction to Econometrics”. The Chief Guest of the session was Professor Dr.Ravindra Brahme, Head SoS in Economics Pt. Ravishankar Shukla University Raipur. Administrator Father Dr. Joshi Varghese, Principal Dr. M G Roymon congratulated to everyone and appreciated the programme. The session was graced by the Principal in-charge Dr.Chanda Varma, IQAC coordinator and 2nd shift in-charge Dr.Debjani Mukherjee. At the outset program convener and Head I/C of Economics Department Dr.Aparna Ghosh welcomed the Chief Guest and all the participants of the session. Dr.Brahme, first of all congratulated the organising committee of the Department for selection of this topic. He stressed on various applications of Econometrics in the field of science, Economics and other domains.He said that without econometric tools scientific research cannot be performed in economics. The thirty hours certificate programme began on November 20 and conclude on 1st December 2023. Different modules has been set and various experts from outside are coming to deliver their lecture.  Fifty plus UG and PG students of St. Thomas College Bhilai and KK Modi University Durg are enthusiastically participating the program and clearing their all doubts. M.A 1st Semester student Harshita proposed vote of thanks and the whole program was conducted by Dr.Kiranbala Das Assistant Professor of Economics. Miss Aparna Dutta faculty, all student representatives of the Economic Association “The Wizard” were actively participated the programme.

“National Cancer Awareness Day”

The P.G. Department of Microbiology and Biotechnology, St. Thomas College, Bhilai observed National Cancer Awareness Day by organizing a lecture for its girl students and female staff. The program was held in collaboration with GEC-NIT Raipur Alumni Association, Bhilai Chapter. The guest speaker was Dr Nivedita Mandal, Gynaecologist & Obstetrician consultant, Bhilai. Er. Nutan Dutt, General Secretary, GEC-NIT Raipur Alumni Association, Bhilai Chapter was the special guest. She graced the occasion on behalf of the alumni association. Principal of the College; Dr. M.G. Roymon in his address stressed on changing lifestyles to avoid being affected by cancer. He called upon the students to lead a healthy lifestyle. Dr Mandal in her lecture apprised the students on the causes of cervical cancer. She emphasized on various preventive measures like vaccinations and tests that could help early diagnosis or prevent cancerous conditions of cervix in females. She also explained on how to self detect breast cancer at the earliest. Students very actively participated in the lively session.

The program was organised by Dr. Shubha Diwan and was attended by all female staff members and students of various life science departments. Ms. Nishita Gautam of B.Sc. Part III Microbiology proposed the vote of thanks.

 

Food Fest and Exhibition Cum Sale

Department of Sociology and Department of Education jointly organised Food fest and Exhibition Cum Sale 2023 on 7th November 2023. Students from different streams of the college enthusiastically participated with their family members in the Food Fest. Variety of Food of diverse cultures, mouth- watering taste and nutritional value were prepared and sold by the students. Cultural events were too the part of the fest and they were truly ‘the cherry on top’.Dr.Aruna Palta Vice Chancellor of Hemchand Yadav Vishwavidyalaya, Durg and Dr. Prashant Shrivastav, DSW inaugurated the grand event. The principal of the college Dr. M. G. Roymon, appreciated the staff and students of both the organising departments for arranging such a mega event. Administrator of the college Rev. Fr. Dr. Joshi Varghese, IQAC coordinator Dr Debjani Mukherjee and 1stshift in chargeDr Chanda Verma extended their moral support. Chief Guest of Food Fest, Dr Aruna Palta, motivated and congratulated the heads of both the Departments, the Convenors, Co-Conveners, Student Coordinators, Volunteers, and the Participating students, for initiating such event and developing team spirit among the students. She also appreciated students for their culinary skills, entrepreneurial tactics, and hardwork. The DSW of the University, Dr Prashant Shrivastav congratulated and praised the college as well as teachers and students for organising such events. The entire program was guided and supported by convenors of the Food Fest, Ms. Deepti Santosh, Head In- Charge of Department of Sociology and Dr. Sheeja Thomas, Head of Department of Education along with Co Convenors of the event Dr. Shabnam Khan, Dr. Rupa Shrivastav, Dr. Kanhaiya ku. Pandey, Dr. Jyotsna Gadpayle, and Mr. Chandan P. Dekate. The event turned out to be a Mega hit due to the tedious effort of all the Student Coordinators namely, Daniel P.U, Daman Lal, Anuj Gupta, Manish Adkane, Utkarsh Sahu, Riya Sudhakar, Rohan Kumar Soni, Sheryil P Anil, Purvi, Avishi, Anushka Bandhey, Manish, Sayed Suleman Ali, Muskan Jayant.

Prizes were distributed to the winners of food fest as well as exhibition cum sale for different categories. Prize for the Popular Dish through Judges choice was bagged by Nupur Nagariya and team, Prize for the most Popular Dish through voting was bagged by Suryakant Dewangan and team. 1st prize was bagged by Tanisha Purohit, 2nd Prize was bagged by Sakshi Tusharika and 3rd Prize was bagged together by Bhaskar Sahu and Kunika Joshi. The prizes for Exhibition were also distributed. Prize for Best Entrepreneur was bagged by Disha Diwan, Prize for Best Artist was given to Suhani Humne and 1st Prize in the Exhibition was given to Anushri Kundu.

 

Cosmetic Competition Report

The Chemistry Department of St. Thomas College, Ruabandha, Bhilai, successfully organized a vibrant and creative Cosmetic Competition “Make Your Own Cosmetic” on November 1st week, 2023.The event aimed to foster innovation and scientific curiosity in the field of cosmetics and personal care products. It was an exciting occasion where participants showcased their talent and knowledge in formulating cosmetic products.: The Cosmetic Competition provided a platform for students to demonstrate their chemical knowledge and creativity in a practical and exciting way. The 1stprize winners of the competition are Sakshi Vaishnav, Raditya Chandra Sahu, Sweta Ambrela. 2nd prize winners are Nishita Gautam, Anshika Yadav, Suraj Majumda, khushboo Patel, 3rd Prize winners are Roshni Dhankar, Namrata Sahu, Jigyasa Sahu.

7th Mar Theodosius Memorial Basketball (Men) Tournament

As per the tradition of every year, this year also St. Thomas College, Ruabandha, Bhilai organized  7th Mar Theodosius Memorial Basketball (Men) Tournament on 3rd – 4th November, 2023. The chief guest of this event was Catholicos & Malankara Metropolitan H. H. Baselios Marthoma Mathews III. In the beginning of the program first of all NSS volunteers presented Chhattisgarhi Folk Dance and Rajgeet to welcome the chief guest and NCC cadets escorted the guest towards the activity place by giving them guard of honor. President of the event and Head of St. Thomas Mission Bhilai, H. G. Manager Bishop Alexios Mar Eusebius welcomed the chief guest by presenting them a bouquet of flower. Principal Dr. M.G. Roymon solemnly welcomed the chief guest and presented the inaugural address. H. G. Manager Bishop Alexios Mar Eusebius in his presidential address gave his best wishes to all the players and said that to win the game you must have team spirit. Chief guest H. H. Baselios Marthoma Mathews III gave his blessings to all the teams for the tournament and motivated them to play with discipline and honesty. During the program the college magazine for the session 2022 – 23 was released by chief guest and by releasing the balloon the chief guest officially declared the tournament open. In the first semi final match Rungta college won the game from D. P. Vipr College, Bilaspur by 57 – 31. In the Second Semifinal St. Thomas College won the game from BIT Durg by 57 – 33. In the final match St. Thomas College won the game from  Rungta College by 47 – 28. The Sports Officer of St. Thomas College, Mr. Kailash Narayan Vaerma welcomed to Dr. Bhupendra Kuldeep, Registrar Hemchand Yadav Vishvvidyalaya, Durg by presenting a sapling. Team Rungta College felicitated with the runner up trophy and Cash Prize of Rs. 12000. finally Team St. Thomas was felicitated with winner trophy and cash prize of Rs. 15000.  The program was successfully conducted by Dr. Shiny Mendonce Head P.G. dept. of English and vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. Rincy Abraham, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Commerce. On this occasion Rt. Rev. Thomas Rmbhan,  Fr. Aju K. Varghese, Fr. Dr. P. S. Varghese, Fr. Jibin Johnson, Fr. Kurian John, Adminstrator of the College, Rev. Fr. Dr. Joshi Varghese, Members of Sports committee Dr. Rincy B. Abraham, Dr. Sunita Kshtriya, Dr. Santosh Miri, Mr. Amitabh Sharma, Dr. Sapna Sharma, Dr. Anupama Gangrade, other faculties and students were present.

Inter Collegiate Basketball Men Tournament

The Inter Collegiate Basketball Men Tournament was organized at St. Thomas College, Ruabandha, Bhilai on Friday, 20th October, 2023. The Chief Guest of this event was Mr. N. K. Banchhor, President Officers Association BSP. First of all principal of the college Dr. M. G. Roymon welcomed all the guests and players and motivated them to play the fair game with sportsman spirit. Chief Guest Mr. N. K. Banchhor said that many players represented at national and international level in different sports from Bhilai city. During the event Administrator of the College Rev. Fr. Dr. Joshi Varghese, Rt.Rev. Thomas Rambhan and Secretary of Officers Association BSP Mr. Parvinder Singh were also present. The tournament was played as per knock out Rule in which 8 teams participated from Durg district. In the first semifinal Rungta College won the match from Swarupanand College by 32 – 31. In the second semifinal St. Thomas College won the match from Surana College by 38 – 6. In the final match St. Thomas College won the game from Rungta College by 36 – 10 and won the title. College Management and all the staff members congratulated to all the players and motivated them to improve the performance in coming future also. Dr. Rincy B. Abraham, Dr. Sunita Kshatriya, Dr. J. Maju, Mr. Amitabh Sharma and Mr. Mahendra Ikhar played a significant role for successfully organizing the tournament.

Blood Donation Camp

The NSS Unit of St. Thomas College, Ruabandha, Bhilai NCC and IQAC organized one day blood camp in collaboration with Blood Bank Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital and Research Centre, Sector 9 Bhilai on Friday, 12th October, 2023. On this occasion Principal Dr. M. G. Roymon said that by donating one unit of blood you can save the life of 4 persons which is great and noble task in itself. Administrator of the college Rev. Fr. Dr. Joshi Varghese gave his best wishes to all the NSS volunteers for successfully conducting the camp. A total of 48 registrations from students and staff members were received and 31 units of Blood were donated in the camp. Dr. Deepak Kumar, Incharge, Blood Bank Sector 9 said that it was a nice and healthy experience during the camp at St. Thomas College and we will conduct more camps in collaboration with St. Thomas College. The camp was conducted successfully in the able guidance of Mr. Mahendra Ikhar, NSS Program Officer St. Thomas College, Bhilai. On this occasion NSS Coconvenor Dr. J. Majju, Dr. Anupama Gangrade, NCC Officer Mr. Santosh Yadav NSS volunteers and others students and staff members were present.

ONE SHOT (COMICS) CONTEST

The P.G. Department of Commerce of St. Thomas College, Bhilai celebrated Gandhi Jayanti by organising a one-shot (comics) contest on the theme “Kindness is the way of life”. Students from all disciplines enthusiastically participated in the contest. After a rigorous review by the judges, Vishva Mohan Singh of B.Com final year was declared the winner of the contest. The runner-up was Riya Sara Jijy from B.Com final year.
The administrator of the college, Fr. Dr. Joshi Varghese accentuated the role of educational institutions in nurturing empathetic and compassionate citizens. He also appreciated the department for promoting unconventional art careers like comic illustrators and writers among the youth.
Principal Dr. .G. Roymon congratulated the students and advocated the need for building social and emotional competencies based on Gandhian values. He recommended holding this contest again next year on a larger scale to support talented students to pursue a career in the comic book industry which has become one of the fastest-growing areas in the literary world.
Dr. Sapna Sharma,Head of the P.G. Department of Commerce highlighted the importance ofcomic books in connecting students with other works of literature, enabling complex literary analysis, and inculcating skills needed for deeper comprehension.
Dr. Sheeja Varkey, Additional Head of the P.G. Department of Commerce exhorted the students to follow their own paths, experiment fearlessly and let the creativity evolve at its own pace during their artistic journeys.

SWACHCHHATA HI SEVA

On 1st October, 2023 as per the directives of Ministry of Housing and Urban Work Department Govt. of India and Hemchand Yadav Vishwavidyalaya, Durg the NSS and NCC unit of college jointly organized the cleanliness drive in the college premises under the aegis SWACHCHHATA HI SEVA. On occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on 2nd October, this cleanliness drive was organized to pay clean tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in which NSS volunteers and NCC Cadets cleaned jointly in the areas of inside and outside of the campus. First of all NSS program officer Mahendra Ikhar welcomed all the guests and students on today’s occasion. Principal of the college Dr. M. G. Roymon motivated all the students to keep maintain the cleanliness in their surroundings and also conducted a cleanliness oath for all the students and staff members. The administrator of the college, Rev. Fr. Dr. Joshi Varghese gave his best wishes to the volunteers for successfully organizing this program. On this occasion the Treasurer of St. Thomas College, and St. Thomas Mission Rev. Fr. Aju K. Varghese, Brother Josen from Nagpur Seminari, NSS co convenor Dr. J. Maju Professors Dr. Anupama Gangrade, Dr. Neelam Gandhi, Mr. Kailash Verma, Ms. Priyanka Ganjir, NCC Female Officer Captain Dr. Surekha Jawade, NSS volunteers and NCC Cadets were present.

 

 

WORLD TOURISM DAY

The P.G. Department of Commerce of St. Thomas College, Bhilai celebrated World Tourism Day with its MoU partners.It collaborated with Bhilai Mahila Mahavidyalaya to organize mandala drawing & chalk carving contests. It then organized terracotta art &pithora painting contests in collaboration with Govt. V.Y.T. PG Autonomous College, Durg.
The theme of this year was blending tradition & modernity in arts and crafts. All the contests witnessed enthusiastic participation bythe students who created works of artistic craftsmanship that enchanted onlookers and judges alike.
The chief guest of the prize distribution ceremony was the Principal of St. Thomas College, BhilaiDr. M. G Roymon. Special guests of the occasion were Dr. Sapna Sharma, Head of P.G. Departmentof Commerce and Dr. Sheeja Varkey, Additional Head of P.G. Department of Commerce.
Dr. M. G.Roymonhighlighted the transformative potential of tourism, the world’s third-largest export industry. He also discussed the vital role of arts & crafts in maintaining cultural identity and the need for supporting artisan communities worldwide.
Dr. Sapna Sharma emphasized the fact that arts & crafts have value beyond their aesthetic appeal as they serve as cultural ambassadors and promote intercultural exchange.
Dr. Sheeja Varkey applauded the creativityof budding artists and reminded students of their responsibility to preserve cultural heritage by keeping the traditional art forms alive.
The guests distributed prizes to the winners amidst thunderous applause from the audience.
